Mentoring, Training, and Continuing Education Aimed at Increasing Diversity of IT Talent

p. June 19, 2012 (Philadelphia, PA) – Chariot Solutions, a leading enterprise and mobile application development consulting firm, announced today that Lauren DiPerna, Sueli Vieira, and Missy Wedig have been selected as the first Chariot Scholars, a program which will take place over a one year period starting in June 2012. Scholarship recipients will receive one-on-one mentoring, skill evaluations, and up to two weeks of tailored individual training.

p. “We would like to congratulate Lauren, Sueli, and Missy on being selected as the first Chariot Scholars,” said Ken Rimple, Director of Education Services at Chariot Solutions. “Chariot is very excited to kick off this program and work with the recipients on increasing their skill levels by mentoring and training them in current technologies. We hope that theses additional skills should allow them to compete in the current job market.”

p. Lauren DiPerna, who has been working in the web space since high school, has a computer science degree with a concentration in digital media. At age 17, DiPerna helped the Boston Museum of Science update their website and has been interested in the web ever since.

p. Sueli Vieira, a Brazilian-American, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Denver, CO, followed by a Marketing degree from the School of Higher Education in Marketing and Communication Management in her native, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Vieira resided in Mexico City for 11 years where she owned a graphic design company. She now resides in Wyndmoor, PA, where she established her Company Blue Square Web.

p. Missy Wedig, a graduate of Temple University and a Veteran of the United States Navy, found her love for computer programming at a young age in San Antonio, Texas. While serving four years in the military, Wedig operated programs that ran on large Sun Microsystem Main Frames. She also worked with code when she ran a celebrity blog. Wedig is now the co-founder of A View From My Seat, a website that enables people to share and browse photos from sports venues around the world.

p. Chariot has matched each of the participants with a Chariot Solutions team member. The scholars will gain access to Chariot’s team of mentors and consultants, and will be advised by the education services team, which was started in 2008, and has provided targeted training to IT professionals throughout the country. Courses cover a wide-range of emerging technologies, including the Spring framework, Hibernate, Maven, Scala, and others.

p. The Chariot Scholars program was first announced at the Emerging Technology for the Enterprise Conference in Philadelphia in May. Scholars were nominated or self-nominated through Chariot’s website and chosen by a selection committee.

“This program will give us the tools to take steps towards doing something about the imbalance of women and minorities in the technology industry both locally and nationally,” said Mike Rappaport, CEO of Chariot Solutions. “Under this program we will provide proper training, mentorship and support to the scholarship winners to help them have long and successful careers in software development.”
