BACKGROUND:
Women are not well represented in technology, in fact the National Center for Women & IT claims that only 25 percent of IT-related jobs were filled by women in 2009, the last year stats are available, marking a decrease from 36 percent in 1991. Additionally, the organization reports that in 2008, only 18 percent of computer and information science degrees were awarded to women, down from 37 percent in 1985. Women hold more than half of all professional occupations in the U.S. but fewer than 24 percent of all computing-related occupations and just 16 percent of Fortune 500 technology companies have women corporate officers.
“2011 is a really exciting time to be a women in technology,” said Tracey Welson-Rossman, Chariot’s Director of Sales and Marketing and founder of TechGirlz, org. “Technology is important in our daily lives and women need to be involved in this piece of the economy, not only as programmers, but as business people, as well.
