Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects as many as one in a 100 people over the age of 60. It is estimated that more than 8 million individuals have PD worldwide, and the number is growing with today’s aging population. Despite immense investment and research, we don’t fully understand the underlying mechanisms of this disease. Why is that?

To understand disease, one must deeply understand the patients who are living with it and individuals who are at risk of developing the disease. We lack this understanding today because the data landscape from which we are trying to derive this understanding is siloed and in disharmony. In this talk I’ll share how Blackfynn is applying engineering and data science to build the largest, highest-quality PD data ecosystem globally, with partners such as the Micheal J. Fox Foundation, and how we’re helping drive scientific discovery and development of effective therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases broadly.
